Anthony Hugh Leigh "Tony" Trimmer (born in Maidenhead, Berkshire on January 24, 1943) is an English former racing driver, who is best known for winning the Shell British Formula 3 Championship and E.R. Hall Trophy in 1970. He is also well known for his victory in the 1970 Monaco F3 race.

Despite having a few British and World titles to his name, Trimmer had an unsuccessful Formula One career, making six failed attempts to qualify or pre-qualify for uncompetitive teams between 1975 and 1978. However he fared better in his non-Championship career, given that he battled his way through a rain-soaked track in a Melchester McLaren to a superb third in the 1978 BRDC International Trophy non-Championship race at Silverstone and beating out many of the bigger names in the process, most of whom were caught out by the torrential rain.

CareerEdit

Before Formula OneEdit

Trimmer was born in Maidenhead, Kent, in 1943. Prior to Formula One, 1970 was a successful year for the Englishman, who won the Shell British Formula 3 Championship, E.R. Hall Trophy and the Monaco F3 Race, driving a Brabham BT-28.

1975Edit

After Hiroshi Fushida's disastrous two race attempts, the fledgeling Maki team chose to replace him with Trimmer for the next three races. Unfortunately for the Englishman, he failed to qualify for either of his three races. However, he qualified the car for the non-championship Swiss Grand Prix, and finished in 13th place, six laps behind.

1976Edit

In 1976, Trimmer had another go at attempting to qualify the Maki, which came at the season-ending Japanese Grand Prix, which also proved in vain, and with that, Maki left Formula One for good.

1977Edit

For 1977, after Maki disappeared from Formula One, Trimmer found himself out of a seat, so he drove a privateer Surtees for the British Grand Prix, but failed to Pre-Qualify.

1978Edit

His sixth and last attempt came in 1978, where he drove a Melchester Racing McLaren, the same car in which he finished third in the BRDC International Trophy earlier in the year, but still didn't qualify.

After Formula OneEdit

Since Formula One, Trimmer continues to race in historic events. As late as 1989, Trimmer was a surprise entrant to the British F3000 championship, even being called up to shake down a Brabham BT58 the very same year.
