Philip Toll "Phil" Hill Jr. (born April 20 , 1927 in Miami, Florida – died August 28 , 2008 in Salinas, California) was a United States driver who drove in Formula One in the 1950s and 1960s and is the only US-born driver to win the World Championship , which he did in 1961 . Mario Andretti is the only other US Champion, but he was born in what was then Italy .
Phil Hill driving Eagle -Climax in the 1966 Italian Grand Prix , but failed to qualify for the race.
