Nicolas "Nico" Hülkenberg (born 19 August 1987 in Emmerich am Rhein, North Rhine-Westphalia, West Germany) is a German F1 driver. Currently, he is driving for the Haas F1 Team in the 2023 Formula One Season. He started at Williams in 2010 where he scored his maiden pole position at the Brazilian Grand Prix, then moved to Force India where he spent 2011 as a test driver before promotion to a race seat in 2012. During the race at 2012 Brazilian Grand Prix, he took his first fastest lap, and achieved another at the 2016 Chinese Grand Prix.

He moved to Sauber for a season in 2013, before in 2014, he returned to Force India, retaining his seat in 2015. In 2016, he got his second front row start, in Austria.

His permanent number in his F1 career is #27.

On 14th October 2016, it was announced that he signed for Renault for the 2017 season.[1] Following the 2019 season, he was replaced by Esteban Ocon at Renault.

After Sergio Pérez tested positive for COVID-19, he was announced to be his replacement at Racing Point for the 2020 British Grand Prix, while Perez was in self-isolation,[2] therefore Hulkenberg also took part at the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix.[3] He also drove in Lance Stroll's seat at the 2020 Eifel Grand Prix when Stroll fell unwell on qualifying day.[4][5] When Sebastian Vettel contracted COVID-19 prior to the 2022 Bahrain Grand Prix, Hülkenberg filled in for him to get his first drive since the 2020 Eifel Grand Prix in the newly redesigned 2022 cars.[6]

He holds the record for having completed the most GPs without a podium; his best finish was 4th place.[7]

Outside of F1, he won the 2015 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Driving Style[]

Peter Windsor[]

In 2015, Windsor conducted a driving analysis of the different Formula One drivers' during February pre-season testing.[8] Windsor watched the drivers' as they entered and exited the highly technical corners of turns two and three of the Circuit de Catalunya.[8]

Hülkenberg was described as only "just getting the car as straight as possible."[8] Although the car would give a light "squiggle" of instability, he was not "rocking the car" in a way that would hamper his line through turn three.[8] Windsor thought that "for sure" that he was thinking ahead to the next corner.[8]
