Stanley Michael Bailey "Mike" Hailwood (born 2 April 1940 in Great Milton, Oxfordshire, England, United Kingdom – died 23 March 1981 near Birmingham, West Midlands, England, United Kingdom[1]) was a British motorcycle rider and racing driver. He is considered to be one of best motorcycle riders of all time, but failed to repeat his successes on four wheels.

Starting out on bikes, Hailwood won nine titles (3 at 250 cc, 2 at 350 cc and 4 at 500 cc) before stopping competitive riding after 1967. Hailwood starting racing in F1 for Reg Parnell Racing (in a Lotus) in 1963 and completed a full season in 1964 (scoring one point), before concentrating on two wheels after the 1965 Monaco Grand Prix.

Returning to World Championship races for Surtees at the 1971 Italian Grand Prix, Hailwood had a good race, leading five laps and finishing fourth. In 1972, Hailwood retired often but scored his first podium in Italy. A disappointing season followed in 1973, and Hailwood was enjoying a much more successful 1974 season when he retired after injuring himself at the German Grand Prix.
