Jean Achard (born Jean-Jacques Grosman in Paris, France on March 15 1918 – died July 14 1951 in Gávea, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) was a French journalist and racing driver who competed in several pre-championship events in the mid-1940s. Throughout 1946 and 1947, Achard enjoyed some good results as he attempted to make it to the top of Grand Prix racing. In July 1947 however, at the Grand Prix de l'Albigeois, Achard suffered injuries in a crash which killed a spectator. The crash kept the Frenchman out for the remainder of the year. Achard did not race again competitively for the rest of the decade.
At the end of 1950, Achard acquired Philippe Étancelin's Talbot-Lago T26C and began to find his way back into motor racing, moving to Brazil in January 1951 to enter local racing events and the 1951 Indianapolis 500. His entry to the Indianapolis event was accepted, but the Frenchman failed to attend.
Two months later, while contesting a hillclimbing event in Gávea, Rio de Janeiro, Achard was driving a Ferrari for Antonio Pinheiro Pires, a young Brazilian driver to whom he had sold the Talbot T26C. The Ferrari had a pedal setup which differed from what the Frenchman was accustomed to - with the accelerator and brake pedals inverted. This confused Achard who subsequently lost control on the twisty circuit and hit a wall, killing him.
