Franck Montagny (born January 5, 1978) is a French former F1 driver who raced for the Super Aguri team in 2006, replacing Yuji Ide who lost his Super License after the 2006 San Marino Grand Prix. He had previously served as a test driver for Renault in 2003 and Jordan in 2005.
Montagny was most recently competing in Formula E, having entered in two ePrix for Andretti Autosport. On the 27th of March 2015, the FIA's Anti-Doping Committee found Montagny guilty of taking an banned substance, after traces of Benzoylecgonine were found in his blood after an investigation launched after the 2014 Putrajaya ePrix. Benzoylecgonine is a by-product, produced when an individual has taken cocaine, for which Montagny received a two year ban from all FIA competitions.
Before Formula OneEdit
Born in Feurs, Loire, Montagny started racing karts there in 1988, winning the cadet class in the French Karting Championship in 1992, and the National 1 class the following year. In 1998, the Frenchman made his Le Mans debut for Courage Compétition and was fifteenth, fourth in the LMP1 Class. Montagny also competed for DAMS in the 1999 and 2000 Formula 3000 seasons, and was on the podium at Hungaroring in 1999.
In 2006, Montagny was signed by Super Aguri, again as a test driver. In May 2006, after a disastrous four-race spell for the Japanese team, Yuji Ide was sat out of the European Grand Prix because of inexperience, allowing Montagny to be promoted to a full race seat and make his Formula One debut alongside Takuma Sato.
On May 10, Ide's Super Licence was revoked, meaning that Montagny was kept permanently by Super Aguri until July 12, when Sakon Yamamoto replaced him for the rest of the season. He finished three races out of seven starts, and was able to race at the 24 Hours of Le Mans during break between the British Grand Prix and the Canadian Grand Prix.
