Description Edit

This is the 8th lap of the 1973 Dutch Grand Prix at Circuit Zandvoort. Due to a suspected tyre failure, the March of Roger Williamson crashed in Tunnel Oost corner and was catapulted. Whilst scraping across the track for 300 m, the petrol tank ignited and Williamson was stuck in his burning car. Because the race was not stopped, but continued under yellow, the firemen could at first not get to the crash site. David Purley had stopped in Tunnel Oost to try to rescue Williamson. However, there was just one fire extinguisher available in the area. The closest fire engine could not get to the crash scene, because it would have to drive the wrong way round the track. The second-closest fire truck arrived after eight minutes, but Williamson had already sufficated in his car. A blanket was thrown over the burnt-out wreck with Williamson still inside, and the race carried on.

Dutch commentary of Frans Henrichs and Henk Terlingen, with English subtitles.
