Peter Kenneth Gethin (February 21, 1940 - December 5, 2011) was a British racing driver, who competed in Formula One between 1970-1974 and won the 1971 Italian Grand Prix. Gethin is also notable for being the only man to win any race in a Formula 5000 car, having won the (non-championship) 1973 Race of Champions in a Chevron-Chevrolet.
Career[]
Before Formula One[]
1970[]
Peter Gethin made his Formula One début for McLaren at the Dutch Grand Prix, replacing the team's founder Bruce McLaren. His teammate would be Denny Hulme.
1971[]
Gethin remained with McLaren for another season, and this time the team was reduced to only 2 cars. He won in the Italian Grand Prix with a close margin between him, Ronnie Peterson, François Cevert, Mike Hailwood and Howden Ganley.
1972[]
Gethin moved to BRM for 1972. He only scored points at Italy, finishing 6th.
1973[]
Gethin replaced Clay Regazzoni for the 1973 Canadian Grand Prix. He retired with an oil pump problem on his car.
He won the non-Championship race, Race of Champions.
1974[]
Gethin replaced Guy Edwards for the 1974 British Grand Prix, when Edwards broke his wrist in a Formula 5000 accident. He retired on the first lap with physical problems.
