Chris Bristow (born December 2 1937 in Lambeth, London, UK - died June 19 in Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium) was a Formula One racing driver. He was killed during the 1960 Belgian Grand Prix, only minutes within the death of Alan Stacey.
Career[]
Before Formula One[]
Early in his career, he earned the nickname "the wild man of British club racing". He had spun or been in a collision nearly every race that he had participated in.
1959[]
Bristow's Formula One career began after he was invited to racing in the 1959 British Grand Prix as a third driver for the British Racing Partnership. He managed to place his Cooper Formula Two car in 10th, but was not invited back for the rest of the 1959 season.
1960[]
Bristow returned to Formula One in the 1960 season, racing in the Monaco Grand Prix, Dutch Grand Prix and Belgian Grand Prix with the Cooper Yeoman Credit Racing team.
He was unable to complete any of the three races that season due to a gearbox failure in Monaco, engine failure in the Netherlands and a fatal accident in Belgium.
Death[]
Bristow was killed during the 1960 Belgian Grand Prix on lap 25. Alan Stacey left the track on the Burnenville corner after being hit in the face with a bird, taking Bristow off of the track. Bristow's car went into a roll after striking an embankment. The car was sent into the barbed-wire fencing, decapitating him.
Stacey also died on the track, only minutes within Bristow.
