Esteban Ocon (born 17 September 1996 in Émalleville, Eure, Upper Normandy, France) is a French racing driver who drives for Force India in the 2017 FIA Formula One World Championship. The Frenchman, part of the Mercedes Young Driver Programme, had spent the first half of the 2016 season testing for Renault, but was drafted into Manor after they dropped Rio Haryanto down to a reserve driver.[1]
Ocon has previously won the 2014 FIA European Formula 3 Championship, before claiming the GP3 Series title in 2015. For 2016, Ocon joined the reformed Renault F1 team as a reserve driver, while filling Pascal Wehrlein's vacant seat in the DTM.[2] However, when Haryanto was dropped by Manor after a lack of sponsorship money, Ocon's contract holder Mercedes arranged for the Frenchman to partner another of their contracted youngsters Wehrlein.[1]
On 10 November 2016, Ocon signed for the Force India team for the 2017 Formula One season as a part of his multi-year Mercedes contract.[3]
At the 2016 Brazilian Grand Prix, Ocon finished 12th, losing out on a possible points finish in the final few laps of the race. He got his first point at the 2017 Australian Grand Prix.
His car number is #31, having been previously used by him in kart racing.[4]
He finished his first 27 Grands Prix without retiring and beat Max Chilton's record at the 2017 United States Grand Prix with his 26th consecutive race finish. In the 2017 Brazilian Grand Prix, Ocon had his first DNF ever after colliding with the Haas driver Romain Grosjean on lap one, his first in a single seater race in three years.
