Bruce Leslie McLaren (August 30, 1937 – June 2, 1970) was a New Zealand race-car designer, driver, engineer and inventor. Between 1958 and 1970, McLaren was a Formula One driver who most notably founded the McLaren team, and scored four race wins. He was the first New Zealander race winner in Formula One history when he took the victory in the 1959 United States Grand Prix.

Aged 22 years, 104 days, he was the youngest Grand Prix winner for 43 years[2], until Fernando Alonso broke the record at the 2003 Hungarian Grand Prix. Sebastian Vettel is the current holder of the record, being 21 years, 73 days old when he won the 2008 Italian Grand Prix.

McLaren spent the first eight years of his career at Cooper, before founding the McLaren team in 1966, driving for them from that point onward.

McLaren was the second Grand Prix winner in his own car after Jack Brabham. He died in June 1970 in a test crash at Goodwood Circuit.

NotesEdit

  1. McLaren's entry to the 1958 German Grand Prix was in a Formula Two car, as the F1 and F2 races were run together. His first Formula One start was in the 1958 Moroccan Grand Prix
  2. Troy Ruttman won the 1952 Indianapolis 500 at a younger age, but McLaren was recognised as the youngest winner of an official Grand Prix.
