Changes from last season[]

Team changes[]

  • After twelve years of using engines powered by Renault, Red Bull signed a memorandum of understanding that would see them competing with engines made by Honda.[53][36] However, they will not be labelled with the name of their engine supplier.[54]
  • Sauber will officially be entered as Alfa Romeo Racing for the 2019 season, with the Italian manufacturer expanding their influence as title sponsor.[7]
    • The official entry list released on the 6 February 2019 would also list Alfa Romeo as the constructor of the chassis.[5]

Testing[]

Testing for the 2019 FIA Formula One World Championship would begin with a tyre test at the end of the 2018 season, before two pre-season tests staged at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in February 2019.[81]

No. Test Circuit Date Report
1 United Arab Emirates 2018 Pirelli Tyre Test United Arab Emirates Yas Marina Circuit 27-28 November 2018 Report
2 Spain 2019 Barcelona Test 1 Spain Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya 18-21 February 2019 Report
3 Spain 2019 Barcelona Test 2 Spain Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya 26 February-1 March 2019 Report

Regulations[]

There were several major changes to the regulations for the 2019 season, most of which revolved around the front wing design and aerodynamics.[82] There would also be changes to the rear wing, DRS and barge boards, all in the pursuit of increasing the amount of overtaking, as well as an increase in fuel allowance.[82] Pirelli also made changes to their tyres, making them softer but with a smaller range of compounds, while bio-metric gloves and stronger helmets were also made compulsory in the eternal quest to increase driver safety.[82]

Technical[]

There were to be a wide range of technical changes ahead of the 2019 season, with the aforementioned changes to the wings and barge boards the biggest revision.[82] Other changes included the addition rain lights to the rear wing end-plates, revisions to the mirror position and size, and re-positioning of the on-board cameras.[82]

Adjusting Aero[]

The biggest feature of the 2019 F1 regulations would be the front wings, with increased restrictions on how many winglets.[82] The new design limited the number of elements on the wing to a maximum of seven, while also limiting the teams to two deflectors to push air over the car.[82] It was hoped that the new design would allow cars to follow one-another better, at the expense of marginally slower lap times.[82][83]

Elsewhere there were also modifications to the rear wing, which was to be increased in size by 100mm, with the DRS slot also expanded by 20mm.[82] These changes would effectively ensure that a car would punch a bigger hole through the air, increasing the effects of slipstreaming, while the 25% increase in DRS would also enhance the influence of the overtaking aid.[82] There were also reductions to the size of barge boards and brake ducts, reducing their aerodynamic effectiveness, as well as a marginal increase in weight to 740 kg including the driver.[82]

Safety Supplements[]

There were also changes on the safety front for drivers, with the successful introduction of the Halo device in 2018 prompting further changes.[82] Indeed, the FIA would implement a new standard for helmets, named the FIA 8860-2018 standard, which sported more ballistic materials, a ten millimetre reduction in the size of the visor, and more composite materials to enhance the effectiveness of the helmet.[82] Biometric gloves were another innovation, which would allow the on-track medical team to get instant information about a driver's heart rate and oxygen levels.[82]

Pirelli Performance[]

For 2019 tyre suppliers Pirelli would introduce some major revisions to their "P-Zero" tyre range, which included a reduction in the number of available compounds.[84] Indeed, just five compounds from 2018 would survive, namely the Hard, Medium, Soft, Supersoft and Hypersoft, although only three colours would be used to identify each compound at a race weekend.[84] The hardest tyre at each weekend would be identified by white markings, the middle compound by yellow, and the softest tyre was to have red markings.[82]

Outlined below is the full range of compounds used by Pirelli, as they were marked during the 2019 Barcelona Tests:

Pirelli Tyres 2019
Pirelli 2019 C1 Pirelli 2019 C2 Pirelli 2019 C3 Pirelli 2019 C4 Pirelli 2019 C5 Pirelli 2019 Inter Pirelli 2019 Wet
C1 - Hard C2 - Hard C3 - Medium C4 - Soft C5 - Soft Intermediate Wet

The Intermediate and Wet tyre compounds and tread patterns were identical to those used in 2018.[82]

Weighing Up[]

2019 would see an significant change in the measuring of each car's weight, with the driver's weight no-longer taken alongside that of the car.[82] In reality 80 kg (minimum) of the 740 kg overall weight (up from 733 kg in 2018), was set aside for the driver and their equipment, with the driver's seat the only area in which ballast can be added to this 80 kg section.[82] The car itself would therefore have to reach a minimum weight of 660 kg, before fuel can be added.[82]

On the topic of fuel there would be an increase in the maximum allowance for each weekend, with each car allowed up to 110 kg, up from 105 kg in 2018.[82]

Sporting[]

There were no major changes to the sporting regulations for the drivers, although there was to be a minor tweak to the point scoring rules first introduced during the 2010 season.[82] Indeed, for 2019 the FIA would award a bonus point to the driver who set the fastest lap in the race, a rule that had last appeared in the F1 rulebook back in 1959.[85] The intention of the rule was to increase the amount of interest in the latter half of the race.[85] The fastest lap point was to apply only to drivers finishing the race inside the top ten.

Elsewhere, there would be a restructuring of the pre-weekend scrutineering procedure, with the teams themselves responsible for ensuring that their cars comply with the rules.[82] To do this teams would sign a declaration ahead of each race weekend stating that their cars conformed to the rules, with checks by officials across the weekend ensuring that these declarations were accurate.[82]

Outlined below is a full breakdown of the point scoring system for the 2019 FIA Formula One World Championship:

2019 FIA Formula One World Championship Championship Points Table
1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th 6th 7th 8th 9th 10th FL
25 18 15 12 10 8 6 4 2 1 1

Elsewhere, after the controversial end to the 2018 Canadian Grand Prix, a new procedure was introduced regarding the chequered flag.[82] For 2019 the "official" end-of-race signal was to be a chequered flag light panel on the start gantry, rather than the fluttering of the traditional black-white chequered flag itself.[82] The flag itself, as tradition dictated, would remain for 2019.[82]
