The XLVII Grand Prix du Canada, otherwise known as the 2010 Canadian Grand Prix, was the eighth round of the 2010 FIA Formula One World Championship, staged at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal, Canada, on 13 June 2010.[1][2] The race would see Lewis Hamilton claim victory and the Championship lead, fending off teammate Jenson Button to lead home a second succession one-two for McLaren-Mercedes.[2]

Hamilton had been the man to beat throughout the weekend, topping all three phases of qualifying to claim pole position ahead of Mark Webber.[2] Sebastian Vettel was next in the sister Red Bull-Renault, while Fernando Alonso claimed fourth for Ferrari ahead of Button's McLaren and Vitantonio Liuzzi's Force India-Mercedes.[2] Webber was subsequently slapped with a five place grid penalty for a gearbox change after qualifying.[2]

For the first time in 2010 all 24 drivers would start the race from the grid, with Hamilton easing into the lead unopposed when the lights went out.[2] Behind, however, there would be chaos in the midfield, as Vitaly Petrov jumped the start, took to the grass to avoid the rest of the field and spun, causing Pedro de la Rosa to take avoiding action as the rest of the field scattered around the errant Renault.[2]

There was more drama at the first corner as Felipe Massa and Liuzzi clashed three times, resulting in the Force India spinning to the back of the field.[2] Fortunately, the rest of the field would make it around the opening lap without drama, until Kamui Kobayashi slammed into the Wall of Champions.[2]

Yet, Kobayashi's accident would not trigger a heavily predicted Safety Car, for the Japanese racer would drag his ruined BMW Sauber-Ferrari to safety.[2] Indeed, there would be no safety cars at all in the opening stages of the race, as the field stabilised with Hamilton leading from Vettel and Alonso, while Button ran in fourth.[2]

The first round of stops would come early on, with Webber staying out for the longest of the leaders having elected to start on the harder compound tyre.[2] Yet, even Webber would make an early stop, pitting just a lap after teammate Vettel, handing the lead to Sébastien Buemi who had Hamilton and Alonso, who jumped Vettel and the Brit in the pits, crawling all over his back.[2]

The second stint passed without issue, with Hamilton establishing a lead after dive-bombing Alonso at the hairpin, while Button ran in third ahead of Vettel.[2] The order would remain stable through to the second round of stops, although this time Webber would stay out longer knowing he was to finish the race on softs.[2]

Webber's pace faded before his stop and hence ended his hopes of challenging for victory, leaving Hamilton with a small lead over Alonso, while the Spaniard was hounded by Button.[2] Yet, the Brit would need the assistance of a slow moving HRT-Cosworth of Karun Chandhok to pass Alonso's Ferrari, pouncing on a misjudged attempt to lap the HRT by Alonso to secure second.[2]

The closing stages saw Button charge off to catch Hamilton, although the #2 McLaren had a comfortable lead.[2] They duly flashed across the line a couple of seconds apart to claim a one-two victory ahead of Alonso, while Vettel and Webber completed the top five.[2] Nico Rosberg was next ahead of Robert Kubica, Buemi claimed eighth after his moment in the sun, while Liuzzi was a bruised ninth after several clashes with Schumacher in the closing stages.[2]

Milestones[]

Standings[]

Lewis Hamilton had moved to the top of the Championship hunt with his second straight victory, claiming 109 points over the opening eight rounds. Jenson Button had retained second, sitting three behind his teammate on 106 points, while Mark Webber had dropped to third on 103 points. Fernando Alonso and Sebastian Vettel were next up to complete the top five, the first of those in the field yet to breach the 100 point mark.

In the Constructors Championship it had been another very good afternoon for McLaren-Mercedes, as their one-two moved them onto 215 points for the season. Red Bull-Renault had therefore slipped 22 points behind the leaders, while Ferrari were a further 32 points behind. Mercedes were in fourth as the final team over the 100 point barrier, while Renault completed the top five.
