The 1970 Canadian Grand Prix was held on September 20, at Le Circuit Mont Tremblant, about an hour north of Montreal. Jacky Ickx led home Clay Regazzoni in a Ferrari 1-2, with Chris Amon finishing third in his March-Ford. But the story of the day was Jackie Stewart taking pole position in the brand-new Tyrrell 001, then absolutely dominating the race until the car broke on lap 32.

Background

The Formula One circus regrouped at Mont Tremblant less than two weeks after the shocking death of Jochen Rindt, the third and most notable loss of the season. For many, the lure of lucrative races in North America was balanced against a desire for the season to be over, so that they could rest and try to heal from their enormous losses.

  • De Tomaso: Another team that was still suffering from a loss, that of Piers Courage at Zandvoort. So when Alejandro De Tomaso announced that the marque would withdraw from auto racing after the United States Grand Prix, few were surprised. Team owner Frank Williams was already in discussions with March about 1971.
  • Ferrari: The Scuderia felt that they had the best cars, and a realistic chance of taking both the drivers and constructors titles away from Lotus. To focus their efforts, they pared back the entries to just two in each North American race, and Ignazio Giunti would stay home for testing.
  • Lotus: Gold Leaf Team Lotus was in such disarray that they withdrew completely from Canada, and some speculated that they would not appear in New York or Mexico.
  • McLaren:
  • Tyrrell: The Tyrrell 001 that had shocked the racing world, had made it's racing debut at the International Gold Cup at Oulton Park, but had not been entered at the Italian Grand Prix. The car was entered here, with a different number than Jackie Stewart's usual March 701, as befitting a car of a different make. Stewart set a time in the March that would have placed him fourth on the grid, but in the Tyrrell he edged Ickx for pole, and during the race he dominated until breaking a front stub axle on lap 33.
